Trek Plan

The journey to Gangotri begins in Dehradun, and the most efficient route covers approximately 242 kilometers by road. You should aim to arrive in Gangotri by around 3 PM. An email will be sent to you detailing your accommodation arrangements. Once you check into your guest house or hotel, take some time to relax and refresh after your journey. In the evening, feel free to explore the local market and visit the nearby temples, where you can soak in the spiritual atmosphere and perhaps try some local snacks.

Having ascended to 10,000 feet the previous day, it’s crucial to spend this day acclimatizing in Gangotri. Take this opportunity to rest and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. You can stroll around the area, visit nearby temples, and engage with the local culture. Staying hydrated and well-nourished is essential as your body adapts to the higher elevation.

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin our trek towards Chirbasa (3,600 m). The trail follows the roaring Bhagirathi River, providing captivating views along the way. The trek to Chirbasa is relatively straightforward, and we’ll stop here for a packed lunch. Post-lunch, we’ll continue to Bhojwassa, where the terrain transitions to a more desolate and barren landscape, often described as resembling Arctic tundra. The trail passes through a dense forest until we reach Bhojwassa, where we’ll set up camp near a small temple and the river. Enjoy the stunning sunset views over the Bhagirathi group of peaks, creating a perfect end to your day.

Rise early to witness the spectacular sunrise illuminating the Bhagirathi peaks. After breakfast, we’ll trek to Gomukh, the source of the Ganges. Gomukh derives its name from its shape, reminiscent of a cow’s mouth. Once we explore this serene area, we’ll continue our ascent to Tapovan. The trail from Gomukh is steep, but as we climb, the views of surrounding peaks become more magnificent. Tapovan, renowned for its expansive meadows, serves as the base camp for Shivling. Here, you’ll find bubbling streams and vibrant wildflowers, creating a picturesque environment. Keep an eye out for herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) grazing nearby. This area is also a favored spot for Sadhus and saints seeking solitude for meditation. We’ll camp in Tapovan, enjoying dinner amidst breathtaking scenery.

Today, we’ll trek to Nandanvan, passing through the mesmerizing Gomukh glacier. The trail leads us from the upper sections of the meadow down onto the glacier. As we navigate the ice, it’s essential to remain cautious due to the slippery conditions. The glacier runs between two mountain ranges, with rocky moraine making the footing easier in some places. However, be wary of deceptive rocks and crevasses. After approximately an hour of walking, we’ll encounter a vertical ascent, requiring careful climbing. Upon reaching Nandanvan, we’ll set up camp for the night, where you can relax and take in the stunning surroundings.

In the morning, we’ll embark on a steady trek towards Vasuki Tal, a beautiful lake set against the backdrop of Mt. Satopanth and Mt. Vasuki Parbat. This trek provides a tranquil escape, allowing you to enjoy the pristine environment and the stunning views of the glaciers. After exploring the area around the lake and taking in the peaceful surroundings, we’ll begin our return trek to Nandanvan, where we’ll camp for the night.

Today, we’ll retrace our steps back to Bhojwassa. The trek back offers an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the landscape from a different perspective. We’ll arrive in Bhojwassa by afternoon, where we’ll set up camp for the night. Take some time to relax, enjoy the views, and reflect on your journey so far.

After breakfast, we’ll prepare for our descent back to Gangotri. The trek down is easier and more straightforward, allowing us to reach Gangotri well before the afternoon. Once there, you’ll have the chance to explore this sacred town, which holds immense significance for Hindus worldwide. Visit the temples and enjoy the spiritual ambiance of Gangotri.

On the final day, we’ll depart from Gangotri in the morning, making our way back to Dehradun. The journey will take several hours, and you can reflect on the incredible experiences and stunning landscapes you encountered during the trek. We aim to reach Dehradun by evening, concluding your remarkable adventure in the Himalayas.
