Overview
The Kedartal Trek is one of the most scenic and thrilling high-altitude treks in the Garhwal Himalayas, Uttarakhand. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 15,748 feet, Kedartal is a pristine glacial lake fed by the Kedar Glacier and framed by towering peaks like Thalaysagar, Bhrigupanth, and Jogin. Known for its rugged terrain, crystal-clear glacial waters, and panoramic mountain views, this trek is ideal for seasoned trekkers seeking adventure and solitude in the lap of the Himalayas.
Starting from the spiritual town of Gangotri, the trek leads you through dense forests of pine and birch, past roaring rivers, and over challenging ridges. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Kedar Ganga, a tributary of the Bhagirathi River, which is said to be Lord Shiva’s contribution to the Ganga. Each day reveals new landscapes, from vibrant rhododendron forests to barren boulder-strewn ridges, making the trek a visually stunning and soul-soothing experience.

Trek Plan
Your journey to Kedartal begins in Gangotri, Uttarakhand. Aim to reach by 3 PM for a briefing session and to meet your fellow trekkers. If you arrive earlier, explore Gangotri's many treasures. Visit the sacred Gangotri Temple, stroll through the scenic pine forests, interact with the locals or sadhus, and discover hidden caves. In the evening, relish a hearty meal and settle in for an overnight stay at a guest house.
Today is reserved for acclimatization. Spend the day resting in Gangotri and preparing your body for the high-altitude trek ahead. Explore more of the town or simply relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty.
The real adventure begins! With the Kedar Ganga river guiding you on your left, the ascent kicks off with a challenge. As you gain altitude, the pines give way to magnificent birch trees, which provide shade along the trail. This section eventually opens up to your first campsite at Bhoj Kharak. The trail is adorned with purple rhododendrons, while the dramatic Thalaysagar peak keeps you company in the distance. One of the day's highlights is crossing the famous "Spider Wall," a steep 60-degree rock face that adds a dose of excitement before reaching the camp. Enjoy an overnight stay in tents.
As the trek continues, the landscape becomes more rugged and adventurous. A landslide has reshaped a section of the path, requiring a bit of creativity to navigate. After negotiating this, the trail descends to the riverbed of the Kedar Ganga, where you cross before heading back to solid ground. The trek opens up to Kedar Kharak, a picturesque campsite encircled by the towering peaks of Drigubanth, Thalaysagar, and Jogin 3. Be on the lookout for blue sheep that often roam the area. Overnight stay in tents.
Today, you'll trek to the stunning Kedartal, passing through three ridges made of boulders. Small cairns mark the path, guiding you as you ascend each ridge. The views grow more spectacular with each climb, and after the final ridge, the pristine Kedartal lake emerges, a shimmering emerald amidst towering mountains. The awe-inspiring Thalaysagar peak stands tall behind the lake, offering a truly majestic sight. After soaking in the beauty of Kedartal and its glacier, you’ll descend back to Kedar Kharak for an overnight stay in camps.
The journey home begins! Though it's a long trek back to Gangotri, the route is mostly downhill, making it a smooth descent. Upon reaching Gangotri, enjoy a comfortable night's sleep and perhaps take part in the renowned evening aarti at the temple.
After breakfast, your trek officially ends. If you've arranged transportation, your vehicle will pick you up from Gangotri and transport you to Dehradun, reaching by the evening.
